“How might we move towards carbon neutrality in daily grocery shopping?”
Carbon Pantry
For most consumers, the choices made at the supermarket are ignorant and lack knowledge of the origins and impacts of food distribution. Carbon Pantry aims to bring awareness around food miles and influence consumers to conciously shop locally.
Food miles calculate where food is sourced from and its impact on the planet. Carbon Pantry is an app that aims to make emission information accessible for users, positively influencing their purchasing decisions. It enables scanning food items and displaying a visual map of the product’s travels.
This information is used to calculate CO2 emissions generated from the sourcing, manufacturing, and transporting of products Our design proposal embraces eco reform within the industry and encourages producers to improve their accountability.

Food Products Study
Context
To understand how to calculate food miles, a food products study was undertaken. Each time a product is moved from one stage to another in the manufacturing process, it adds up to the total CO2 output.

Pain Points & Relievers
The issue with food miles is the lack of conscious consumer behaviour unknowingly purchasing foods with higher CO2 ratings. The target audience highlighted in this research is the regular everyday shoppers regardless of socioeconomic background, demographic or age.

Traffic Light System
Carbon Pantry enables users to compare CO2 emissions of similar products to help the decision-making process in the shopping aisle. We aim to turn the shock of knowing the toll of imported foods into a positive and educational platform. A traffic light system was employed to calculate food miles by distinguishing three levels of CO2 output.

App Functions
Functions & Features
Secondary functions such as a shopping list and forum pages help users plan. To build a positive community, the forum section enables conversation and asking questions and a recipe forum for sharing recipes.
As companies are reluctant to reveal detailed information we plan to enable crowdsourcing of data. Finally, badges motivate users to use the app continually by creating an achievable goal, granted with “Guilty Pleasure Rewards” for 30 shops with only Green Light products.
