Has technology inhibited the value of traditional puppets in Indonesians?

How might traditional Indonesian puppets continue to thrive in an ever-westernised society?

Techno-comfort

Techno-comfort is an observation of our perceptions and relationships with the objects around us that aid in building our identity. With the ever-growing development in technology and manufacture, emotional objects also revolutionise their interaction with users.

Wayang

Wayang is a traditional puppet theatre from Javanese culture in Indonesia (Augustyn et al., 2018). Interviewing Deska, an Indonesian puppeteer, revealed that social enthusiasm is still alive despite varying generations. Emotionally attached to the Wayang Kulit character “Bima”, he integrates his “unbeatable yet kindhearted” character into his life. The characters “mirror personalities of human beings”, enabling persona identification.

Design Artefact

As a design response to strengthen the engagement of Wayang through technology, we propose an online personality test which generates Wayang characters as a result. User interaction through personality tests enhances user-object emotional connection. The artefact aims to contribute to Wayang as a modern take on the culture, giving potential for global exposure and preservation.
